The start of my interest in the classical world really began with my exploration of the biblical texts and especially those of the New Testament period. I recognised very early in my study of the bible that an understanding of these texts was enhanced by an understanding of the world in which the authors lived.
Travelling to sites of antiquity and seeing the “everyday items, sites and artefacts” of the period enables the traveller to immerse themselves into the society, culture, politics and geography of period. There are also some great books and media that also help us to appreciate the background and setting for the New Testament writings.
